A simple overview of off-grid living in Mohave County, AZ: hauling water, solar power and septic permits, and what to ask before you buy.
What off-grid means
Off-grid land has no hookup to public water, power or sewer. You supply your own. That brings freedom and also responsibility, so it helps to understand the three basics before you buy.
Water: hauling, storage and wells
Many off-grid owners haul water to a storage tank and use a pump to supply the home. In Dolan Springs, the Mt. Tipton Water standpipe on Pierce Ferry Rd is open 24/7 for filling up, so check how far it is from the parcel you are looking at. Some owners later look into a well; well depth and success vary a lot from place to place, so talk to a licensed well driller and check Arizona Department of Water Resources records.
Power: solar systems
Solar panels charge batteries, and an inverter turns that stored power into household current. System size depends on what you run: lights and a fridge need far less than air conditioning or a well pump. Many people add a generator as backup. A solar installer can size a system to your actual use.
Wastewater: septic permits
A home needs a wastewater system permitted by Mohave County. Soil and rock conditions decide what kind of system works. A perc test (a soil test) is a smart step before you buy, because some lots can take a conventional system and others need an alternative design.
RV stays while you plan
County rules limit how long you can stay in an RV on your land and what you need for wastewater. Check current rules with Mohave County Development Services before planning longer stays.
